Tropic Air Kenya, based in Nanyuki, has become a trailblazer in the fields of aviation and adventure tourism, captivating both local and international travelers with its unique services and commitment to excellence. Founded over 30 years ago by Jamie Roberts, the company has grown from humble beginnings into one of East Africa’s leading aviation service providers, known for its precision, innovation, and passion for adventure.
A Humble Beginning
Jamie Roberts, who was born in Nakuru and grew up in Baringo, launched Tropic Air in 1990 with just a single Cessna 206 aircraft. The airstrip in Nanyuki, which was little more than an overgrown patch of tarmac at the time, was where Tropic Air began its journey. Initially, the company ferried tourists to safari camps and lodges, helping cut down the long and arduous drives into remote areas. Over time, Tropic Air’s fleet and services expanded, transforming the region’s tourism landscape.
From a small plane to a full fleet that includes fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, the company now serves a wide array of clients. Today, Tropic Air operates over 12 aircraft, including the versatile Cessna Grand Caravan and helicopters like the Airbus H125 and H130. The company’s growth is a testament to Jamie’s determination and vision, as well as to the ever-increasing demand for efficient and scenic air travel across Kenya and beyond.
Services and Specialties
Tropic Air is renowned for its tailored flying safaris, which offer a bird’s-eye view of Kenya’s diverse and stunning landscapes. From the snow-dusted peaks of Mount Kenya to the vast savannahs of the Maasai Mara, Tropic Air provides unforgettable experiences. Their services stretch beyond the borders of Kenya, with flights extending into Tanzania, Uganda, and Ethiopia.
But Tropic Air is more than just a luxury tourism provider. The company also offers aerial logistics for conservation projects, wildlife management, and anti-poaching activities, collaborating with key organizations to protect East Africa’s delicate ecosystems. Additionally, Tropic Air’s medical evacuation services are vital for those in remote areas with limited access to healthcare. The company has conducted numerous search-and-rescue missions, often on a pro bono basis, further cementing its reputation as a key player in Kenya’s aviation and conservation sectors.

A Historic Feat: Wingsuit Jump from Mount Kenya
In August 2024, Tropic Air made headlines by participating in the first-ever tandem wingsuit jump over Mount Kenya. Two Red Bull athletes, Román from Spain and Álvarez from Chile, leaped from a Tropic Air helicopter at an altitude of 18,000 feet, soaring at speeds of 230 kilometers per hour over the majestic mountain before landing at Lake Michaelson. The event, which required precision planning and meticulous coordination, was a testament to Tropic Air’s ability to adapt to even the most extreme challenges.
This historic wingsuit jump showcased Tropic Air’s adventurous spirit and commitment to pushing the boundaries of aviation, capturing the attention of thrill-seekers and adventure enthusiasts alike.
Pioneering Conservation and Community Support
Over the years, Tropic Air has played a pivotal role in supporting conservation efforts across East Africa. Their helicopters are frequently used in wildlife tracking and anti-poaching efforts, while their team assists in restocking trout in Mount Kenya’s lakes and rescuing injured animals such as elephants. The company’s work in conservation comes with a deep sense of responsibility, and they often offer discounted rates for conservation missions.
One notable story involves Jamie’s willingness to offer a rescue for a porter injured on Mount Kenya. When the team’s manager asked about the cost, Jamie replied with a figure of KSh 400,000 before quickly assuring them the rescue would be free as long as they committed to training their porters to avoid such accidents in the future.
Medical missions are another area where Tropic Air has made a difference. Jamie recalls flying to Kalacha in Marsabit to assist with a cataract operation for the Gabbra community. The campaign transformed lives, with elderly men and women who had been blind for decades regaining their sight. Jamie recalls an elderly man joyfully exclaiming after seeing his wife for the first time in 30 years: “Oh, we have gotten old.”
Tropic Air operates in some of the most challenging environments, including the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia, one of the hottest places on Earth. The region, which lies 500 feet below sea level, is infamous for its volcanic activity and extreme heat. Yet, Jamie and his team continue to operate efficiently, proving that no challenge is too big for their well-oiled operation.
Despite the challenges, Jamie says the toughest moment came not in remote Ethiopia but in Nairobi’s Globe Roundabout. While filming, they had to land their helicopter between matatus, only to be surrounded by an aggressive crowd. Fortunately, they managed to take off without incident, but the memory of that close call remains vivid.

Meeting the Needs of High-End Clients
Tropic Air’s helicopter safaris have become a popular choice for elite travelers, including royalty, movie stars, and global celebrities. From breakfasts on Mount Kenya to sundowners in the Chalbi Desert, Tropic Air’s exclusive tours offer a level of luxury that few can match.
Their most notable project to date may be their involvement in Safaricom’s 10th-anniversary commercial, shot across Kenya’s most scenic locations. Jamie proudly recalls how people watching the final product couldn’t believe it was filmed entirely in Kenya. “I’ve flown everywhere, but Kenya is a beautiful country,” he says.
Running a private aviation company in Kenya comes with its fair share of challenges. Jamie laments the high cost of doing business, particularly in terms of importing aircraft, which attract a 48% tax. As a result, few operators can afford to purchase new helicopters. “You will not find me flying my family around in one of the choppers either. It’s expensive,” Jamie remarks.
Despite the high operational costs, Tropic Air remains dedicated to providing top-tier service while supporting conservation, medical efforts, and tourism development. The company’s relationship with the people of northern Kenya has also proven essential in navigating the often-volatile region.
Tropic Air Kenya’s success is rooted in its ability to adapt, innovate, and provide world-class service while remaining committed to its core values of conservation and community support. As the company continues to grow, Jamie Roberts remains humble, crediting his dedicated team for the company’s achievements.
From its modest beginnings, Tropic Air has grown into a key player in Kenya’s aviation sector, and with its focus on pushing the limits of aviation and adventure, the sky truly is not the limit for this pioneering company.
