The Chinese African Development Bank will fund 15 ongoing road infrastructure projects in the Country at a cost of Kshs. 45 billion.

The Bank will provide up to 80% of the contract sum of the projects, with 20% of the project having been paid by the Government of Kenya when the projects were initiated. These are projects that have stalled after they were started by the Government.

The funding will be managed under the Chinese African Development Fund and will be channelled through the Central Bank of Kenya directly to the Contractors of the identified projects. The Bank has committed Kshs. 36.3 Billion, which comprises 80% of the total cost of the projects that have been identified.

A team from the Chinese Development bank met the Principal Secretary for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua so that they could discuss the funding model for the identified projects.

The Head of the Chinese Development Bank Li Pingfei said they had identified the projects after extensive consultations with the Ministry of Roads and Transport, and they comprise of 14 road projects from the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) and 1 (one) from the Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA).

Eng. Mbugua expressed the government of Kenya’s gratitude to the Chinese Development bank for the gesture that will see the completion of over 780 kms of road across the country.

He said the balance of the Kshs 9 Billion which is the 20% component that the Government had spent on the identified projects at their initiation.
